Irish Schools title for Hutchy!

Tullamore Harriers Stadium was the venue today for the Irish Schools championships where a large number of City of Lisburn athletes were in action. For lots of the young athletes this meet will be the most important of their season and many rose to the occasion with excellent performances. In fact no less than 11 medals were won including one title to Andrew Hutchinson.

In the Junior Girls’ events Erin Quinn was 6th in the 100m. Roseanna McGuckian has another year in this age-group but brought home two silvers from the 200m (26.15s PB) and long jump (5.10m). Jane Anderson battled her way to bronze in a good 11.88s after having some issues with the starter in a fast 75m hurdles. Kathryn Case made her first visit to the Irish Schools a successful one, returning home with a bronze medal in the triple jump although also with a sense of frustration as the winning jump was way below her PB.

In the Inter Girls’ age group Kathyrn Wallace was in action in the hammer early this morning and finished 5th but her throw of 34.23m was a PB and best of the Ulster throwers. Anna McIlmoyle was 5th in the sprint hurdles in 12.94s but cleared 1.55m in the high jump for bronze. After a big discus PB at the Ulster Schools Caris Greenwood extended it by another couple of metres here to 36.38m for an excellent silver. Aoibhin McManus jumped exactly 5 metres in the long jump which placed her 7th.

In the Senior Girls’ events there was a bronze medal for Laura McBurney in the 100m after her 13.11s run. Libby Rose ran a PB of 16.66s which left her less than a tenth of a second outside the 100m hurdles medals. She was also 8th in the long jump. Hollie Johnston jumped 10.69m for a superb bronze in the triple jump and was 6th in the long jump.

Based on recent form Andrew Hutchinson looked like a good bet for an Irish Schools title and he achieved that with a fantastic win in the Junior Boys’ 80m hurdles in a PB of 11.71s. He was also 2nd in the high jump with 1.75m to equal his PB. Stuart McEwan was 4th in the 200m in 24.10s.
Josh Atkinson was a bit disappointed with his bronze in the Inter Boy’s discus with a throw of just under 40m but any medal at this level is a fine achievement.
Well done to all those from the club who qualified for Tullamore and performed so well today.
