Antrim Cross-Country

Greenmount College, Antrim was the venue on Saturday for the NI Senior cross-country championships where the province’s top local talent took on a host of international distance-running stars from Europe and Africa. Also on the programme were a number of junior races which also included high class fields with a number of young City of Lisburn athletes facing opponents from all corners of the British Isles.

Kate Gourley had perhaps her best win of the season in the Primary Schools race which featured many Southern visitors.

The under-13 1.8k races saw Rachael Wylie finish in 28th place, just ahead of Lucy Smyth in 30th.

At under-15 level Zoe Carruthers had yet another superb run to finish 5th in the 3.6k event. However, she had the distinction of being first local athlete across the line, behind athletes from Ireland, England and Scotland. Natalie Fair was 40th in the same race.

In the under-15 boys’ event – also over 3.6k – there were more good runs from Jonathan Whan and Tom Baird. While they finished 6th and 10th respectively, they were the first two N. Ireland athletes across the line, again behind some talented British and Irish talent.

Congratulations to all the young Lisburn athletes on their excellent showing at Antrim.
