Mallusk yesterday was the venue for the largest annual festival of cross-country running in the province – the Ulster Schools Championships, incorporating the Flahavan’s Primary Schools challenge. Across the twelve-race programme featuring around a thousand young athletes there were many good runs by City of Lisburn athletes including several individual medal winners.

Primary Schools Races – Kate Gourley had another good run although was not quite able to defend the title she won last year when a year young, and settled for a fine second place. Behind her the promising Rebecca Wallace was 5th with Olivia Neill in 21st and Olivia Savage 72nd. Ben Ritchie showed his all-round abilities by placing 31st in the boys’ race.

Mini (Year 8) age group – After a great relay leg in the Odyssey recently Emma Conlin showed her endurance capabilities when placing 22nd here. Matthew Neill, who himself was part of a medal-winning relay team in the Odyssey, placed 38th in the boys’ race with Sean Terek in 45th.

Minor (Year 9) age group – Madison Bowyer has been consistently good over the country again this winter was 2nd in a very tight race, with Rebekah Douglas 15th and Lucy Smyth 29th.

Junior (Year 10) age group – Zoe Carruthers was an excellent 2nd here while her club-mate, speedster Jessica McMaster was a commendable 47th. Tom Baird was 5th in the boys’ race which will see him through to the lrish Schools championships.

Inter (Year 11 and 12) age group – Rebecca Harvey was 15th here and will also race at the Irish Schools with her very strong Victoria College team.

Well done to all those City of Lisburn athletes who competed so well at Mallusk.
