More medals on day 3 of Juvenile Indoors

Day 3 of the NI and Ulster age-group championships took place at the Meadowbank Arena, Magherafelt on Saturday 03 March. Those City of Lisburn athletes in the U12 / U13 / U18 and U19 age-groups were competing for titles, All-Ireland qualifying places (top 3) plus medals to add to the haul of 38 won by their team-mates on days 1 & 2 at the Odyssey.
The club won 8 medals on day 3 in 2011, but with a larger squad here this year, Team Manager Joanne Savage had hopes of improving upon that total. In the end the squad did all their parents and coaches proud with 8 individual plus 3 relay medals.
U12 Girls (3 medals) – Olivia Savage had the honour of being the first City of Lisburn athlete on the podium after a fine 1.15m PB in the high jump which earned her silver. However she went one better in the shot to take gold and the title with 6.83m! Grace Hillman was unlucky to just miss a medal when placing 4th in the 60m in 9.35m, while Rebecca Wallace ran well for 5th in the 600m in 2:02.8.
In the long jump Erin Fisher had a big PB of 3.40m for a fine 6th place out of 32 athletes. This jump would have earned a medal last year. She was also 6th in the high jump. In the 4x100m relay the team of Olivia, Tyla Evey, Erin and Grace claimed a well deserved silver in 63.33s.
U12 Boys (1 medal) – In the 60m Ben Gibson was second in a blanket finish in 9.09s, a mere 0.01s behind the winner. He also was 12th in the 600m. Christopher Quinn missed out on qualification for the 60m final by a narrow margin. The relay team of Josh Ritchie, Matthew Moran, Christopher and Ben placed 4th in 62.80s.
U13 Girls (1 medal) – Kayla Hall made it through to the 60m final where she was 8th in 9.6. The highlight in this age-group was a great run by the relay team who were 2nd in 61.85s. The team comprised Kate Gourley, Grace Hillman, Kayla and Sarah Trevithick.
U13 Boys ( 2 medals) – Simon McMaster proved his big sister Jessica is not the only good long jumper in the household with a fine silver medal performance. He led for much of the competing with his 3.84m and was unfortunate not to take home the title. Ben Ritchie was 8th in the shot and 18th in the 600m where Sean Terek ran well for 7th. Sean just missed out on a place in the 60m final with a 9.48s PB although Lisburn were represented in the final thanks to Simon McMaster (6th 9.18s) and Bradley Mulholland (5th 9.06s).
In the final relay event of the day the squad of Bradley Mulholland, Sean Terek, Ben Ritchie and Simon McMaster ran superbly to win the 4×100 relay in a great finale to the day. The boys ran a great time of 60.23s.
U18 (1 medal) – Jonathan Hill won a tight long jump competition by just 5 cms with a 5.55m indoor PB for his first NI title.
U19 (3 medals) – In this age-group there were a couple of medals from Adam Hill. Firstly he retained his 1994 HJ title from last year with another 1.80m clearance, his third time over at least this height this indoor season. He also took home a silver from the 60m hurdles with a time of 9.26s. Aaron Dalzell was second in the 60m in a PB of 7.51s and will be one to watch come the outdoor season.
Well done to all the athletes who did so well at Magherafelt, meaning the club won a total of 49 indoor NI and Ulster age-group championship medals in 2012 – up from 26 last year. Many will now resume training for the outdoor season which will be here before too long while a fair few are planning to head to Nenagh at the end of the month for the All-Ireland indoors.
