Edwards and Co Meet 1 – Report

The 2012 outdoor season started with a bang for City of Lisburn AC who had dozens of athletes competing at Meet 1 of this year’s Edwards and Co series. It was also of course the last competition at the Mary Peters Track before it’s closure for re-development, with the great woman herself even making an appearance and providing many of our young athletes with the chance to get a photo with their heroine or get their number autographed!
Across all age-groups and event categories, red vests were to the fore with some 43 medals won on the night – a fantastic sign of the strength of our junior club in particular just now with the promise of a great season ahead. Space allows only for mentions of the medallists here but there were numerous PB’s and encouraging performances by the City of Lisburn squad across the entire programme.
U11 – (6 medals)
The 150m sprints saw Ben Gibson pick up a silver in 22.5s just ahead of team-mate Ben Whiteside in 3rd. Rebecca Wallace picked up a bronze in 24.58s, before adding a 600m silver in 2:05.1. The talented Ben Gibson then struck gold in the long jump with 3.25m with Erin Fisher jumping an excellent 3.20m for silver in the girls’ event.
U13 – (12 medals)
There was a fine Lisburn 1-2-3 in the 200m for Louis McGuckian, Bradley Mulholland and Josh Armstrong, Louis leading the way with a 28.34s PB. Grace Hillman picked up a 200m silver in 30.64s. At 800m Matthew Neill ran a great PB of 2:35.7 for second in a very close race. For the girls it was gold for Kate Gourley who ran 2:45.1 ahead of team-mate Tyla Evey in third.
In the field there was Lisburn 1-2 at the long jump for Josh Armstrong (4.16m) and Bradley Mulholland while in the high jump it was gold for Katie O’Reilly in an excellent 1.27m with Katie Gillespie 2nd. Olivia Savage was the winner of the shot.
U15 – (13 medals)
Ciaran Barnes made an excellent debut in the red vest, running a 26.64s PB for 3rd in the 200m. Megan Marrs was 1st girl in a great PB of 26.82s with Katie Larmour winning a bronze for her 27.68s PB. At 800m Tom Baird ran well for 3rd in 2:22.7. Like his younger sister Ben Fisher took home long jump silver after a 4.69m effort with Thomas Quinn 3rd in 4.46m. At discus shot specialist Matthew Dalton won in a PB of 23.17m ahead of Ross Magee.
There was an excellent City of Lisburn clean sweep for the ladies in the shot – Sarah Woods leading the way with a super throw of 8.57m, just ahead of Megan Marrs with 8.49m with Natalja Ritchie in 3rd. Natalja earlier won the U15 hammer in a 24.24m PB with Jodie Savage 2nd.
U17 – (9 medals)
There was an outstanding display of speed from Stuart McEwan in the 200m, where he won by over a second in 23.37s – taking half a second of his PB in the process. In second place was James Docherty in 24.58s. Erin Quinn didn’t need to stretch herself too much while winning her 200m in 27.72s. Dominic Martin has clearly wintered well after an excellent 2:11.2 outdoor PB – well over 10 seconds quicker than his best last year. This earned him a well-deserved bronze. Stuart won himself another gold in the long jump with 5.04m, with Kathryn Case stepping up to U17 competition for the first time with two golds of her own in the high jump and shot. Finally, Michael Logan (29.54m) and Cameron Magee made it a City of Lisburn 1-2 in the discus. It is great to see Cameron return to action after nearly two years out with a nasty knee injury sustained playing rugby.
Senior – (3 medals)
Chris Reynolds had an excellent opeining meet of 2012, winning the senior discus in 43.56m. There was a PB from Courtney Sloan in the 800m with 2:22.9 gaining her a bronze, while Kathryn Walace picked up a shot silver with 7.33m.
