The Athletics NI “Rising Stars” Talent Development programme for 2011/12 concluded today with a competition at the Antrim Forum followed by a BBQ for all athletes, parents and coaches. The young athletes contested the 100, long jump, shot and 800m with medals being awarded to the first three boys and girls in each event plus a trophy for the best male and female athlete overall.

The City of Lisburn AC athletes who were in attendance all gave good accounts of themselves, with several recording performances which saw them amongst the prizes:-

100m

In the sprint Matthew Dalton was 2nd in a PB of 12.8s ahead of Ryan Keenan who showed he’s made a good recovery by placing 3rd. There were no Lisburn girls in the medals although Sarah Woods (14.5s) and Alix Galbraith (14.6s) both ran well.

Shot

Matthew Dalton was the top boy here with a best effort of 11.60m while for the girls there was another City of Lisburn win for Sarah Woods who took the gold with a throw of 7.98m, just ahead of Alix Galbraith who threw 7.93m.

Long Jump

Matthew Dalton was first again here with a PB of 5.11m, with Alix jumping 3.75m to Sarah’s 3.73m.

800m

Matthew rounded off an incredible day by winning the 800m in a PB of 2:27.

Primary Schools XC 1000m

Kate Gourley went in the 1000m for those members of the Athletics NI Primary Schools squad and she enjoyed another good run which saw her finish in 2nd place for the silver medal.

Unsurprisingly this left Matthew as winner of the trophy for best overall male athlete of the competition. Matthew will now have the honour of being the first to have his name engraved on the new “Rising Stars” perpetual trophy provided by Athletics NI. Congratulations to Matthew, Ryan, Sarah, Alix and Kate on their medals today.
