Libby and Linzi score full points at All-Ireland League

Glorious conditions greeted the clubs who had travelled to Antrim from all parts of Ireland for Sunday’s All-Ireland League Round 1 fixture. City of Lisburn ladies are once again contesting the Premier Division and the girls put in a good all-round display to leave us 4th in the match and 6th overall including the Southern fixture on the same day. In a very tight division it will be all to play for in Round 2 on 22 July as only the top 8 teams will reach the All-Ireland final at Tullamore on 19 August.
Libby Rose was the top Lisburn points scorer, contributing 21 of the club’s 88 points on her own. She won the sprint hurdles in 16.14s, placed 2nd in the 400m hurdles in 66.46s before throwing 8.78m for 3rd in the shot in a heroic all-round display. Our only other win came from NI Senior champion Linzi Herron in the long jump with 5.60m. More good points came from Caris Greenwood at the discus with 34.35m.
Courtney Sloan led for much of the way in the 800m, but had to settle for 3rd in the 800m in a fine 2:22 after a brave run, while Kathryn Wallace matched that position at the hammer thanks to a 36.29m throw and Anna McIlmoyle also came third with 1.55m at high jump. It was good to see Hollie Johnston back in action and she was 4th in the triple jump. Michelle Rodgers was another busy athlete, with 4th in the 400m in 62.00s being her highlight although she also scored valuable points at 100m and javelin.
A very special mention must go to the three Lisburn Masters athletes and mums who all made a very valuable scoring contribution to the team’s success – Debbie Marrs in the walk, Grainne Keenan making her track debut at 1500m and especially Diane Watson who missed the start of the 3000m and despite starting perhaps 150m behind the field still managed to reel in and beat one competitor!
Finally the 4x100m relay team finished 3rd in 51.94s. Athletes please put the 22 July Round 2 fixture in the diaries!
