Wed 20 June 2012--admin

After a 30 medal tally from the City of Lisburn Under 14 and Under 15 athletes on day 1 of the Age-group championships at Antrim, there was a haul of 32 from their Under 16 and Under 17 team-mates on day 2.

Medallists were as follows:-

Under 16 Boys – 6 Medals

Congratulations to Connor Field who won the 100m here with a time of 11.96s. Sam Wallace had a very good championships, safely qualifying for the All-Ireland’s after two gutsy runs over the hurdles. He placed 3rd in the 100m hurdles in 15.69s and later on was 2nd in the 250m hurdles in 36.26s. Callum McLaughlin was also in good form on the track, taking a 100m bronze in 12.32s.

In the throws Josh Jordan was 2nd in the hammer thanks to a 36.92m first round effort and also 3rd in the discus with 34.70m.

Under 16 Girls – 16 Medals

Roseanna McGuckian took home two more championship golds. As Irish Schools 200m champion she was hot favourite and duly cruised to a comfortable win by over a second in 25.55s. At 100m she didn’t have it quite so easy with Megan Marrs opting for this sprint but Roseanna held her off by 12.74s to 12.92s for a Lisburn 1-2.

Megan was under pressure to match brother Robbie’s three-medal haul from the day before and she managed this in some style. Her high jump PB win in 1.65m puts her 2nd in the UK rankings this year. She also had her first race at 80m hurdles and won from a strong field with 11.91s which would put her up around the U17 UK top ten even though she is still U15.

Jane Anderson looks like she has found her event as she was a class apart in the 250m hurdles which she won in 37.37s to go with her sprint hurdles bronze. The talented Katie Larmour hasn’t been near a track since the Ulster Schools 4 weeks ago. However she returned in good shape from recently captaining the Ulster U16 hockey squad to success in a tournament in Holland to earn a pair of slivers here at 200m (27.29s PB) and long jump with 4.69m.

Zoe Carruthers ran an intelligent race for a well-deserved silver at 1500m, while Caitlin Rose earned her place on the podium with a bronze in the 250m hurdles.

Natalja Ritchie took home a couple of championship throws medals including hammer silver in 27.69m and discus bronze with 17.14m. Lara Creighton had a good day, winning the pole vault by equalling her PB of 2.10m and placing 2nd at javelin with 24.16m. Cara Burke had a great PB jump of 1.55m for silver at high jump which is one of the strongest events in our junior section just now.

Under 17 Boys – 6 Medals

Jonny Whan had a superb race to become N. Ireland 3000m champion. Well done also to Dominic Martin who earned a bronze for his 55.09m effort at 400m.

In the field Cameron Powell was 3rd at long jump with 5.06m. Andrew Hutchinson won the high jump with a superb 1.80m clearance with Fiontann Curran 3rd in 1.55m. Highlight in the field here though was Christian Robinson who made up for his DQ in the 100m with a 12.76m PB for triple jump gold.

Under 17 Girls – 4 Medals

Erin Quinn was 1st in the 400m with her time a respectable 62 secs on her debut over the distance. In the field Caroline Woods enjoyed her first championships, taking home hammer silver with 15.66m. Anna McIlmoyle can always be relied on for a medal and it was silver this time in 1.55m. Junior Girls captain Aoibhin McManus led for much of the long jump but had to settle for silver with 5.05m her best jump.

Congratulations to all athletes of the Junior Club on a remarkable total of 62 medals. Thanks also to all the parents for their wonderful support on the day and of course to the coaches who ensured that the athletes were well prepared for these championships.
