Roseanna McGuckian’s selection for the Irish Schools team for the SIAB international in Ashford, Kent next month should now be a formality after a fantastic performance at yesterday’s Inter-provincial match. The 14 year-old sprint star was called up to the Under 17 Ulster team and recorded the best results of her career with individual gold and silver in the two sprints. Perhaps surprisingly the win came in her less-favoured 100m with her 12.94s run into a strong headwind being the only sub-13 second performance. She was then 2nd in the 200m in 25.5s before helping Ulster to 4x100m silver to complete a great day’s work.

Christian Robinson had a good day, smashing his long jump PB with 6.33m for 4th but then winning silver in the triple jump with 12.56m. Anna McIlmoyle has jumped higher than the 1.58m she produced here but her high jump bronze was the best result of her season. Megan Marrs was 4th on her Ulster Schools debut, also with 1.58m.

Erin Quinn helped Ulster to 4x300m relay silver after earlier placing 5th on the individual event in 43.34s. Aaron Dalzell was another relay silver medallist after a great 2nd leg for the 4x100m team. In his individual events he was 5th in the 100m in 11.83s and 4th in the 200m in 23.4s. These performances may help him make the sprint relay squad for the Schools International.

Andrew Hutchinson recorded 1.75m at the high jump for 5th place and Ronan Jenkinson threw 42.81m at javelin for 6th place – both valuable contributions to the Ulster total with 6 to score. Just out of the points were Michael Logan who threw 32.82m for 7th at discus and Jonathan Hill who triple jumped 11.59m for 7th.

Aoibhin McManus was 5th in the long jump with 5.05m for more good Ulster points.

Congratulations to all the City of Lisburn athletes on representing their province with distinction at the meet.
