Roseanna wins Irish U16 200m title at Tullamore

Roseanna McGuckian had the best result of the small City of Lisburn squad at the All-Ireland Juvenile championships at a very showery Tullamore today. After claiming Irish 200m silver in her age-group in 2011 she went one better this year to become All-Ireland U16 champion with a run of 25.92s (-3.4s m/s) during a torrential downpour. Earlier on her brother Louis was in action in the U14 200m heats but he missed out on a place in the final on this occasion.

Tom Baird had a super PB of 4:27.55 to knock some 4 seconds off his PB to place 3rd in the U15 1500m and claim his first All-Ireland track medal.

In the field events Sarah Woods wasn’t in her very best form in the U15 javelin after enduring a bad stomach bug for the previous 24 hours. However, her 26.91m effort in Round 6 was enough to clinch bronze – also her first medal at All-Ireland level and a fantastic contrast to her three fouls in this competition in 2011. Matthew Dalton picked up a couple of medals on the first weekend here a fortnight ago but missed out this time after placing 4th in a high-quality U15 shot competition which saw the first two athletes throw nearly 14.50m. At his best Matthew would have been capable of taking another medal home but an ankle injury was a factor in keeping him to 12.77m this time out.

Congratulations to all our young athletes on representing the club so well at the All-Irelands. This brought the tally from this year’s Irish championships to 2 Golds / 2 Silvers / 8 bronzes for a total of 12 – an increase from the 9 won in 2011.
