N. Down AC post-Olympic Open Meet

Tue 21 August 2012--admin

A breezy Bangor Sportsplex was the venue last Monday night for North Down AC’s post-Olympic Open Meet. A number of City of Lisburn athletes took the chance for another outing with electronic timing available. There were some strong performances but as is customary at this track, fairly strong headwinds in the home straight kept sprint performances down.

Hurdles

Thanks to the hosts for accommodating a late request to hold some hurdles races. Megan Marrs won the U15 girls’ 75m Hurdles event, dipping below 12 seconds despite the headwind with a time of 11.90m. Behind her some of our other athletes struggled a little with the wind and the switch back to UKA spacings and heights after racing recently with Irish specification hurdles. Sarah Woods clattered a couple of hurdles heavily while placing 2nd in 13.63s with Therese Hillman also clipping barriers while running 13.74s for 3rd. Grace Hillman is still an Under 13 athlete but had a promising run over the 75m hurdles too with a time of 15.85s.

Ben Fisher stayed sharp ahead of the UKYAL finals in Manchester with a 12.78s run in the U15 boys 80m hurdles. Over U17 100m Hurdles Christian Robinson made his debut ahead of the multi-events and won in a respectable 15.96s just ahead of Jonathan Hill who was 2nd in 16.69s .

Adam Hill had a run-out over the 110m 3′ 3″ hurdles in a time of 16.88s.

100m Races

In the 100m races Grace Hillman had a super win in the combined u13 and u11 race, running a strong 14.71s into the wind. In race 2 Therese Hillman ran 14.47s with Sarah Woods 7th in 15.42s, while in race 3 the strength of Megan showed as she won in 13.09s.

Ben Gibson went in the first boys’ race and was first of the four u11 athletes in 15.64s. In race 2 Christian Robinson has run 11.48 this season so his win in 12.03s was an indication of the effect of the headwind. Jonathan Hill was 2nd in 12.13s with another U17 Jake Porter 3rd in 12.68s while Ben Fisher ran 13.25s.

In race 3 Adam Hill showed the improvement in his speed this year with a run of 11.82s for 2nd place into a headwind of over 2 m/s.

300m / 400m

Christian Robinson is better known as a triple jumper but made a very impressive debut over 400m, placing 2nd in 53:06s. Grace Hillman also impressed as she ran an excellent 300m time of 49.46s.

Well done to all!
