The Lagan Valley / Edwards and Co meets for this season concluded last Thursday night at a rainy Antrim, with another load of medals after some strong performances by the City of Lisburn young athletes.

A total of 40 medals were won on this occasion, which were well spread across all the junior age-groups. This is a sign of the great work being done by all the coaches of these young athletes and hopefully an indication that the club will be able to have continued success over the next few years. Space here allows only for mentions of the medallists who were as follows:-

U11 – 7 medals

In the 100m races Josh Patterson led a Lisburn 1-2-3 with a 15.8s win just ahead of club-mates Kurtis Gillespie in 2nd and Josh Ritchie in 3rd while Holly Mulholland won a well-deserved silver when placing 2nd out of 15 athletes in 16.39s in the girls’ races.

Over 600m the talented Josh Patterson finished 2nd in 2:00.50 with Josh Ritchie picking up his 2nd medal of the evening in 3rd in 2:01.27. A great run of 2:02 earned Rebecca Little a silver in the girls’ race.

U13 – 11 Medals

Louis McGuckian’s excellent season continued with another gold here in the 100m in 14.00s, with his pals Josh Armstrong (2nd) and Bradley Mulholland (3rd) making it a CoL clean sweep. Over 1500m Sean Terek had a fine run of 5:09.87 for silver.

In the field events there was a gold for Simon McMaster in the shot with 6.90m with Ben Ritchie collecting a bronze to add to his collection of medals from this series, while the consistent Katie O’Reilly won her high jump with a 1.30m clearance.

Josh Armstrong is a talented all-rounder and his 4:02m long jump placed him 2nd with Simon McMaster 3rd with 3.96m. The City of Lisburn girls also won silver and bronze in this event thanks to Anna Stanfield’s 3.87m and Clodagh McManus’s 3.63m.

U15 – 15 Medals

Robbie Marrs is enjoying some good late-season form and placed 2nd in the 100m in 12.80s with team-mate Ryan Hall 3rd in 12.89s. Megan Marrs was 1st in her 100m in a super 12.97s with Jessica McMaster placing 3rd with a good run of 13.54s.

In the field Ben Fisher won a very tight long jump competition which saw another 1-2-3 for CoL. Ben won with 4.75m only on count-back from Robbie Marrs with Ryan Hall 3rd on 4.74m, while Jessica McMaster was 2nd in her long jump with 4.65m.

There was another clean sweep for Lisburn in the girls’ high jump in this age-group. N. Ireland U15 champion Phoebe Tan won with an excellent 1.53m performance, with N.I. U14 champion Alix Galbraith 2nd with 1.45m. All-rounder Sarah Woods has been over 1.44m recently but took bronze here with 1.30m.

The final medals in this age-group came from the hammer throwers. Natalja Ritchie was over 30m for the 2nd time this season, taking silver with 30.70m. Alix Galbraith threw a remarkable PB of 22.80m for 3rd – a throw which would have earned her bronze at the Ulster Schools in May!

U17 – 7 medals

Stuart McEwen looked sharp in the 100m which he won in 11.72s with Callum Archer 3rd in 12.02s. Our boys managed a clean sweep in the long jump in this age group. Jonathan Hill led the way with a 5.90m PB ahead of colleagues Stuart McEwen in 2nd with 4.74m and Sam Wallace 3rd with 4.72m.

Aoibhin McManus was 1st in her long jump with a leap of 4.84m while Caitlin Rose was 2nd with 4.13m.

Apart from those mentioned, as ever there were a load more good performances by the big City of Lisburn squad so well done also to those who managed PB’s.

Thanks once again to Lagan Valley AC for another great series of meets this year.
