Ciara Mageean will begin her World Youth Championship challenge in Italy on Thursday when she competes in the heats of the 800 metres .

The Portaferry girl goes into the Under-17 event ranked fourth in the world after setting a new Irish junior record of 2:05.13 in late May.

Her coach Eamon Christie says that the 17-year-old’s target is to qualify for Sunday’s final in Bressanone.

“All her preparations have gone well so we’re very hopeful,” said Christie.

The twice Irish Senior Indoor 1500m champion is earmarked to take part in Thursday’s opening 800m heats at 0930 BST although there is the possibility that a small entry could lead to the abandonment of the first round.

Semi-finals are then scheduled for Friday at 1300 with the final taking place on Sunday at 1915.

“A Sudanese girl and two Ukrainians are ranked ahead of Ciara but it’s difficult to know what the standard will be like because there will probably be Ethiopians and Kenyans involved that we don’t know anything about,” added Christie.

“A couple of decent Americans have run 2.06 as well so it could be a strong enough entry.”

After her challenge in Italy, Mageean will return home for four days before heading to Finland for the European Youth Olympics, where she will compete in the 1500m.
