WORLD SILVER FOR CIARA!

Sun 25 July 2010--admin

Congratulations to Ciara Mageean on her superb run for 2nd place in the 1500m final in Canada at the 2010 IAAF World Junior Championships this evening. She earned her place on the podium with only an Ethiopian girl ahead of her and with a Kenyan in 3rd. We have become used to enjoying Ciara’s fantastic achievements but this silver medal at a global level must arguably rank as the highlight of her career so far. It is an exceptional performance and will continue to ensure that her achievements receive much deserved attention and recognition even from outside the athletics community, while in the world of athletics everyone in the club, the whole of Ireland and indeed beyond have been well aware for some time what a special talent she is.

Even to reach the final of a global event is a wonderful achievement for a local athlete but to win a medal is an incredible feat and will provide huge inspiration not just to the younger athletes coming through but to everyone who has been following her career.
In the race she displayed mature tactics, showing excellent pace judgement by holding back and not going with the outrageous 61 sec first lap which some of the other African contenders paid for in the latter stages. Her time of 4m 09.51s was a PB by almost 6 seconds and is not only an Irish junior record but a Northern Ireland senior record! Well done from all your club-mates!
