Young Athletes League

City of Lisburn young athletes and their supporters were out in force on Saturday at Antrim in Round 1 of the NI Young Athletes’ League. Conditions were dry if a little breezy and the day saw a whole range of excellent performances across all age groups in CoL colours.

The U13 girls produced many fine individual performances including Thereze Hillmans’s double in the A hurdles and B High Jump. Lauren Rea and Jodie Savage had a fine double in the A and B discus. Katie Larmour won the sprint and backed this up with 2 second places also on the track, while Madison Boyer won the A High Jump.

The U15 girls relay was the most dramatic race of the day. Erin Quinn’s team-mates had combined well to gain her a 25 metre advantage approaching the changeover for her final leg. However, as she took off a loosened shoe meant she couldn’t accelerate as normal. With the shoe now hanging half-off coming into the straight, she was in danger of surrendering her lead. However,to the relief of the very vocal Lisburn supporters, she kicked off her loose shoe and with a great final burst of speed saw the team home safely.

Erin and Aoibhan McManus showed their versatility, combining well to manage a “double double” winning the A and B 100m and javelin. Jane Atkinson dominated the hurdles and the High Jump and Erin finished a busy day with victory in the A Shot.

In the U17 girls Kathryn Wallace was the queen of the field events with victories in the A Hammer, A Javelin and B shot. Katie McComb had a fine 300m and A Shot double. Libby Rose and Helen Begley took a long jump double with Libby also taking a great sprint and intermediate hurdles double on the track.

The U13 boys had just a couple of CoL athletes but there were 2nd places from Jack McComb in the 100m and also from Thomas Quinn in the Shot / Javelin. In the latter event he enjoyed throwing further than his big sister earlier in the day giving him household bragging rights.

In the U15 boys age-group Sam Wallace wasn’t to be outdone by his big sister with a couple of victories of his own in the A Discus and Long Jump. Caelan Tyler made it a Lisburn double in the Discus.

In the U17 boys Adam Hill took full points in the hurdles and high jump. Kadum Hasson and Harry Howard were both 2nd in their 100’s while Kadum’s fine anchor leg in the relay brought the team home in style after a mishap at the final changeover.

Congratulations to all athletes (and supporters). See you in Londonderry for Round 2 on 08 May.   JMcW
