UK School Games

Three female members of the City of Lisburn U17 squad who played a big part in helping the team reach the UKYAL finals were unable to compete in Birmingham last weekend as they were in Sheffield with the NI team at the UK School Games.

Although the girls are to be congratulated on their selection the standard was high and none of them were particularly happy with their performances – perhaps a bit of late-season fatigue. Aoibhin was 8th in the long jump with 5.07m while a repeat of her best efforts this year would have seen her up around the medals. Rebecca Harvey was also 8th in the 1500m in 5:23 while the consistent Anna McIlmoyle managed 1.55m on the Sunday which was very wet.

All the girls will have benefitted from the experience and the good news is that they will all be young enough to compete again next year when the competition is earlier in the season (May) in the Olympic Stadium! Perhaps they will be joined by a few more of their Lisburn team-mates next year?!

Laganside 10k

Back in Belfast the biggest local athletics event last weekend was the Laganside 10k promoted by North Belfast harriers. Heather Ardis had a great run, finishing as 2nd lady from the very large field in a fast 39:28 PB. Jonathan Fay also turned out running 46:21.
