UK Transplant Games / BT 5k Donor Run

Last Sunday saw the annual UK Tansplant games comes to Belfast, which gave two City of Lisburn Transplant athletes the chance to compete for British titles on their home track at the MPT!
Following on from their recent success in Sweden at the World Transplant Games both Orla Smyth and Irene Jeffers had fantastic days. Irene won five golds and was awarded best female athlete in her age category at the Sunday night awards dinner. Orla didn’t do too badly herself with six golds plus three trophies – for best female track perfomance, fastest female transplant athlete in the 3k race and best overall female in her age category!
The ladies were quick to recognise the support of their coach Eric Frizzell. Meanwhile another couple of Eric’s squad, Melanie Minshull and Declan Morgan, had good runs at Ormeau Park in the Belfast Telegraph Donor 5k. Melanie ran a speedy 22:31 which placed her 5th female overall! Going even quicker was Declan Morgan who with a 19:16 PB was an excellent 3rd place from the entire field.
