Lisburn & Banbridge Junior Sports Day

Tue 28 June 2011--admin

Sunday past saw another hugely successful event in our annual fixture with our friends from Banbridge AC, when we were also happy to welcome a small group from St Anne’s AC. The weather was perfect with athletes and spectators for once this season enjoying warm, sunny and calm conditions. All athletes got the chance to try a sprint, a throw, a long jump and an endurance run with ages ranging from 6 up to 13.

As ever at this event it was all about taking part for most and the chance to try some different events but there were some good performances by the older athletes in the 12-13 age group. Lisburn’s Katie Larmour was perhaps the stand-out performer of the girls with a 66-second 400m, a 4.63m long jump PB and a great run in the 100m. Natalja Ritchie with 8.49m in the shot and Aoife Doherty with her 7.89m effort both showed the form which brought them medals at the age-group championships recently.

Ben Fisher took advantage of the kind conditions to record a PB of 5.07m in the Long Jump. Banbridge’s Lean Glover caught the eye with some good performances including an 8.18m shot.

This will have hopefully whet the appetite of the older athletes for the NI age-group multi-event championships at Antrim on 20/21 August, which Lisburn as a club traditionally supports in large numbers – mark it in the diary now!

Finally, thanks to the large numbers of coaches and parents who volunteered yet more of their time to ensure a successful and memorable afternoon for the young athletes.
